• Short Summary

Glamorous Oscar ceremony where 'Gigi' wins 9 Oscars and David Niven wins best actor award.

  • Description

Titles read: "HOLLYWOOD - GIGI WINS 9 OSCARS".

Hollywood, California, United States of America.

General view of the Pantages Theatre on Oscar night. Crowds waiting outside to see the stars arriving wave at the camera. We see film actress Ingrid Bergman arriving at the theatre. Former heavyweight champion Joe Louis and his wife and mother (?) arrive.

Film star wife and husband Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis arrive (what a gorgeous couple). Policeman pushes crowds back. Film star Susan Hayward and her husband (?) arrive as commentator says Susan later won the best actress award (for 'I Want To Live').

Inside the auditorium we see L/S of Irene Dunne and John Wayne on the stage as they present the best actor award to the dashing David Niven (for 'Separate Tables'). M/S of a huge Oscar figure. Back onstage a very glam Rosalind Russell (great outfit topped with glittery turban) presents a special honorary Oscar to Maurice Chevalier for his performance in the film 'Gigi'.

Another gorgeous pair, singer / actor Dean Martin and actress Sophia Loren present the Oscar for best song to Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Lowe for 'Gigi'. Commentator says 'Gigi' won 9 Oscars in all, the highest since 'Gone With The Wind'.

    Notes on file.

Note: there is no natural sound in this item although paperwork and old database records state that there is. Perhaps there is another version around somewhere?

"Susan Hayward and her husband (?)" - yes, that's her second husband, Floyd Eaton Chalkley.

"Frederick Lowe" in text and tags should read Frederick Loewe.
