  • Short Summary

Huge crowds greet German soldiers returning to Berlin in 1918. Germany.

  • Description

German Army returns to cheering crowds in Berlin; November 1918.

    Germany.

Crowd in foreground, army trucks rolling by; people on crowded cafe balcony in background watching parade below. Closer shot troops marching; military & civilian spectators in foreground. Wide shot tall old buildings; people waving from all windows & balconies. Hands in foreground hold up leaves as Army passes. Shot from high above: parade moving through narrow gap in huge crowd. MS men standing on top of pillar with posters on it.

Pan right on crowd; more people climbing up on whatever is available. Soldiers ride horses past camera. Horse-drawn wagons pass; decorated with leafy branches; soldiers wave. Shot looking over crowd at rally; with political leaders on platform; decorations all about. Soldiers marching towards camera. Pan on people waving handkerchiefs. MS as young woman conducts a few soldiers singing a song.

(This is really some of the most amazing footage from the war - what's incredible is that this is the losing side! The way they're carrying on with such joy; you'd think they'd won.)

Some of this also on ON 246 C2.
