• Short Summary

The first look at the new American-built tanks - the 'General Grants' - in Giza.

  • Description

    Titles read: "GENERAL GRANT TANKS".

    El Giza, Libya.

At the railhead of Giza, we see various shots of General Ritchie's new tanks - the American-built 'General Grant'. The tanks arrive by train, covered with tarpaulin. United States instructors explain the structural details of the new vehicles to British soldiers. The soldiers run to the tanks, get inside, fire the guns and drive the tanks off. Good shots of numerous tanks being driven across a desert area. Soldiers in a 'General Grant' move slowly past a burning tank - probably destroyed in their practice session.

My grand father is in this film, he can be clearly seen in stills 17,18,19. He is stood immediately at the front of the tanks gun barrel.
This film was brought to my attention by my grandmother many years ago. She told me the story of having gone to the local cinema during the war with my mother and other relatives, her husband (my grandfather) had been posted overseas having joined up in 1940.
During the evening this Pathe news film was shown and my family immediately recognised my grandfather who they hadn't seen for two years. They caused such a commotion in the cinema with their excitement, the manager arranged for them all to have a private viewing of the film with other members of the family and presented my grandmother with a photographic still from the film which I still have. I have even managed to trace the battalion war diary that records the visit of the film crew.
Thanks to Pathe News I have a video record of my grandfather who sadly died when I was five years old.
