    L/S of countryside. M/S of children playing near the church. C/U as they play with model aeroplane. Children and adults look to the skies at the sound of 'planes flying over. A blacksmith stops shoeing a horse and looks up. C/U of another elderly man looking up. Women repair and board up broken windows, others go out shopping and take their children to school. Ladies look in the window of a clothes shop.

    Troops gather as women serve them tea and they relax on the grass. Various shots as women deliver milk and mail. Various shots as an old fisherman goes down to the coast, a soldier checks his permit and he is allowed under the barbed wire. C/U of him smiling with pipe in his mouth. He sets off with his net.
