• Short Summary

Stoke City football team, including a young Stanley Matthews, in training.

  • Description

Titles read: 'Famous Football Clubs In Training No. 6 - Stoke City'.

Brief shots of an athletic statue and athletes in action.

    Stoke, Staffordshire.

Various shots of the Stoke City football team in training. We see 44-year-old captain Bob (?) McGrory (the oldest player in league football) with secretary-manager Tom Mather. Other players seen are W Spencer, Tutin, Turner, Harry Sellars, JA Johnson, Harry Davies, Tommy Sale, Bobby Liddle, Stan Matthews (aka Stanley Matthews - we see his "peculiar action of stopping the ball and then proceeding" when dribbling). Some shots are in slow motion.

Trainer Tommy Vallance looks on while the players head the ball to one another. Tommy is seen tending to the foot of a player in a suit with the club doctor AP Spark. We see goalkeeper Norman Lewis.

Note: commentator refers to McGrory as 'Tom', then as 'Bob' - I think the latter is correct.

There were 3 'seasons' of these 'Football Teams / Clubs in Training' in the Pathe Sound Pictorials - this is an item from the second season.

Yes, Bob McGrory is the correct name and he followed Tom Mathers as Manager of the Club.

My Grandfather, Billy Spencer joined Stoke from Hebden Bridge & was from Nelson, Lancashire.
