I was one of group Royal marines put ashore on the island of Zante the day after the 1953 earthquake to assist the population,
We were the first foreign nationals on the island and were put ashore from the British cruiser HMS Gambia.
When we arrived in the bay early on the day after the quake, there was a Greek freighter already in the bay but he had not taken any action and I believe our captain went so far as to order the freighters captain to assist in any way he could.
We were there for three days and with the ships stores completely used up Gambia was relieved by her sister ship HMS Bermuda
On our second day there an American ship arrived and landed a group of us marines and sailors onto the jetty, but at no time did I witness any of them go inland
I have been invited back to Zante after 60years to commemorate the anniversary this August Alan
