    The earthquake reported here occurred on 24 January 1939. It is known as the "Chillan Earthquake", Chillan being the area beneath which the quake began.

    This is the single earthquake that has caused the most deaths in Chile. It had a magnitude of 8.3 MS. The death toll was around 28,000.
