Unissued / unused footage - dates and locations may be unclear or unknown.
Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) at Pangbourne College, Berkshire.
Various shots of prize-giving at Pangbourne College in a tent or marquee (some shots are very dark, with people almost silhouetted against the back of the tent).
General view as the Duke comes in and is applauded by the audience. Captain Superintendent makes short speech introducing the Duke and asking him to present prizes. Several shots of the Duke presenting prizes and chatting to some of the boy cadets - natural sound throughout so we can hear some of the Duke's comments to the cadets (mostly regarding the books they are being given as prizes). Shots of the audience applauding.
MK Matthews is presented with a special prize - looks like binoculars. JRD Hall is given the Founder's Silver Medal - amid the applause Duke asks "What do you get the Founder's Medal for?". Hall replies but hard to make out what he says. Duke makes sure the medal has Hall's name on it before he hands it over. AW FitzRoy gets the Queen's Medal. Duke hands FitzRoy the medal saying "I didn't know such a paragon existed!", then gives him a telescope "From the Trinity House".
The Duke addresses the boys saying how glad he is to be at the College. He talks of having served with Pangbourne officers and says the only difference between them and Special Entry cadets is that those from Pangbourne had older uniforms. He hopes the prizes he has given out today will act as encouragement to reach for the better and more important prizes in life. He asks them to remember that their greatest ability will be in handling men and talks of a happy ship being a successful ship. He says the burden of running our ships will fall upon them before very long, and says the quality of the officers must be as high as the high reputation of British seamen. He ends by wishing them all the very best of luck in whatever they do and wherever they go. Audience stands and gives three cheers, led by unseen man.
