Dr Cyril L Cottle was 27 at the start of his South Sea expedition. The older man ‘staring at the camera’ in your description is probably Sir Jeremiah Colman, age 63 in 1922, of the famous mustard family, who funded the voyage of the Malaya.
Dr Cottle, leader of the expedition, is more likely to be the younger man with the cigarette to the right of Sir Jeremiah.
