The fire engine was a newly acquired 1936 Merryweather , which replaced the 1928, second hand lorry. The Chief was the only full time firemen on the brigade at the time. A number of townsfolk were volunteers. When war was declared in 1939, Hayes Fire Brigade consisted of 2 large appliances and a water carrier, 6 sub-stations around the town with 2 Coventry Climax and a total of 150 fully trained firemen available.
