We were thrilled to find this footage of my grandad Bert Kemp who served on the HMS Ajax - he is shown here as one of the sailors sitting down and smiling for the camera (third from left) while enjoying food and drink. We've always been so proud of the fact he was involved in this famous battle and to this day have the diary he kept while aboard, which notes in a matter of fact way how he saw ship mates killed before his eyes. He was a very modest man and never really spoke much about the war, apart from commenting that he didn't like Guy Fawkes night as he'd "heard enough fireworks". It is wonderful to see his ebullient personality captured on film and as a family, we will always remember his sense f fun. We all shed a tear on discovering this film - thank you British Pathe. RIP Bert Kemp 1915-1980
