Footage of coast guards in action in Dover, England.
Coast Guard Exercises. Dover, England. 1920's?
Military. British Coast Guard practice rescue exercises near Dover; England. Men come out of small building; pulling a cart loaded w/ crates. They set up a missile launcher on a tripod . Nice shot of the rocket taking off with rope hooked to it; pans w/ it as it makes an arc of smoke; & pulls the rope behind it. Two men up on a pole; rope & pulley attached to it. 1 man climbs into a ring hanging from pulley; w/ head & shoulders & arms sticking through. This contraption slides down the rope at an angle & delivers the man to the ground.
One man carrying another on his back. Next; man with a lot of bricks strapped round his torso and a protective basket-like helmet ties a rope round his waist; climbs rope ladder up cliff (white cliffs of Dover). Shots of crew at the top holding ropes; looking over edge. Shots of man climbing- - he struggles at times but succeeds. CU man takes basket off his head. Apparently this is to accustom the Coast Guard men to carry something heavy like an injured person up the cliff w/o losing their balance. Emergency; accidents; training; safety drill.
