• Short Summary

Brilliant story of parsons at play at a Butlin's Holiday Camp during a clerical conference.

  • Description

    Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

M/S of a colourful kind of miniature train (the sort you see Noddy driving in Toy Town) arriving at Butlin's Holiday Camp, carrying several clergymen from the diocese of Southwark and their luggage; commentator says "The scene is a big, gay holiday camp" ...mmm! M/S of a sign post pointing to numerous attractions on the camp. The clergymen are shown to their chalets (nice, though brief shots, and a rare glimpse - you don't often get to see the chalets in these Butlins stories).

M/S of the Bishop of Southwark, Dr Mervyn Stockwood, in his vestments and carrying his mitre as he collects his newspaper from a vendor outside a Butlins store on the way to the morning service. Various shots as conference attendees watch a demonstration of a new way of leading the service; it looks much the same as the old way to me. Commentator explains the conference sessions have been arranged so the men can join in ordinary camp life in the afternoons and evenings.

L/S of a crowd of men queuing to get into a campsite pub, 'Ye Olde Pig and Whistle'; M/Ss inside of a fabulous revolving bar; a clergyman accepts a drink from the barmaid. Some vicars in dog collars are seen taking part in a race that involves jumping along with a ball between their legs; another has a go on a trampoline; one brave clergyman in socks and sandals has a go at the 'chopsticks dance' - dancing between some bamboo poles, much to the amusement of the crowd (see CP 299 for more details of this dance).

Various shots of men at the camp (without clerical collars) as we are asked to guess if they are campers or parsons. One of the men. described as a photographer from New York, seems to be the man who snaps Sabrina in CP 58. The Bishops of Southwark and Woolwich (Right Reverend Thomas Robinson, with 'comb-over' hanging down) are seen getting out of a swimming pool. Note: there is no print for this issue. On file is a letter from the Bishop of Southwark and a typed sheet detailing programme for the conference. Cuts exist - see separate record.
