• Short Summary

Aviators Jorge Chavez Dartnell and Charles Weymann try to cross the Alps between Switzerland and Italy by plane.

  • Description

Title reads: "Brigue, 19th September. Chavez on his monoplane tries in vain to cross the Simplon".

Simplon Pass, the Alps, connecting Brigue, Switzerland and Iselle, Italy.

Aeroplane flying over pine-covered mountains, heading upwards into fog or clouds, unfortunately it seems to be quite hazy so the higher mountains in the distance do not show.

Intertitle reads: "... Weymann on his biplane is not more successful".

Similar shot of another failed attempt, this time by aviator Charles Weymann in a biplane.

Intertitle reads: "Brigue, 23rd September. The Alps have been crossed by Chavez".

Good CU Jorge Chavez Dartnell seated in his aeroplane, smoking cigarette.

    "Chavez" is Jorge Chavez Dartnell.

Note that "Brigue" is now called Brig.

The end of the film congratulates Chavez on his crossing of The Alps on 23 September 1910. What it fails to say is that Chavez crash-landed heavily at the end of the flight, and tragically died of his injuries 4 days later.

    "Weymann" is Charles Weymann.
