• Short Summary

Charlie, '14-year-old' xylophone player, looks like he could be a bit older than that!

  • Description

Titles read: "Now for Charlie - The Boy Wonder Xylophonist. At the piano - Reg. Morgan."

    London (probably Pathe studio).

Brief shot of xylophonist Teddy Brown, who commentator describes as "the biggest xylophonist on earth". We then cut to Charlie, Teddy's young rival of 14 years, playing his own composition (unnamed) on the xylophone.

I think Charlie looks like a midget, not a 14-year-old boy. Does anyone know the real story behind this act?

Charlie the wonder boy xylophonist appeared in Archie Andre's Band at the Opera House Tunbridge Wells . He is said to have created "a good deal of enthusiasm, particularly when he milked the cow". Probably during the 1930's.

I wonder if he was paid half a crown per solo. This was what Andre paid my dad for trumpet solos in the late 1930s, Red Sails in the Sunset a regular request. Knowing Archie my dad insisted in the coin upfront!
