• Short Summary

Comedy Roman chariot racing at Butlin's Holiday Camp in Filey, Yorkshire.

  • Description

M/Ss of a Roman bust with golden hair, beard and toga; carved stone panel showing Roman figures (both shots from CP 290 - Roman Room); cut to a man wearing a shirt in a field with a wreath on his head having a Roman metal breastplate put on him. We see other men and women getting into Roman costumes as the commentator says "At a holiday camp in Filey, Yorkshire, the accent is not on authenticity but on fun".

A crowd of people watch as the men drag the chariots to the starting line, and the women, all in pink togas with gold breastplates underneath, climb onto the chariots there. M/S of one pair of women on a chariot as the the two men waggle it about to try and make them fall off; M/S of spectators looking on and laughing - it looks quite cold; most people wear coats and jackets.

C/U of a man waving a flag to start the race; M/S of the chariots racing off; one pair of women immediately fall backwards off their chariot and land on their backs with their legs in the air! Various M/Ss as the other contestants race on past the crowd who cheer them on.

M/S of the winners crossing the finishing line; a Redcoat leads the men up to get their prize of a silver cup. C/Us of adults and children in the crowd applauding; a man and woman from the winning team gazing at their cup.

Note: Although Butlin's isn't mentioned, I am assuming it is as Redcoats are seen. (For search purposes: Butlins.)
