• Short Summary

Great footage of a cabaret ball at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

  • Description

Titles read: 'Now PATHE PICTORIAL is taking you over to The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden - For a minute or two of CARNIVAL!'

    London.

Nice shots of couples in evening dress dancing at a cabaret ball or gala at the Royal Opera House. We hear Jack Plant singing on the soundtrack (seems to have been dubbed over the dancing shots), then see Horatio Nicholls conducting the band in "one of his own compositions" - couples attempt to dance to this sort of oom-pa-pa waltz.

We then see Africans in traditional costume dancing around a fire-eating man.

Next act is the Max Rivers Radio Girls - a line of chorus girls in Spanish-style skirts and tops and black gloves - doing a dance routine with lots of shimmying to a rumba tune.

Finally, we see comedians Nelson Keyes and Lupino Lane in white tie and tails having a comedy fight on a mat before wrestlers Rough House Curtis and Al Hamilton have a bout. Lupino somehow gets involved in the fight and ends up with a tattered shirt as the audience howls with laughter.

Note: this is a very atmospheric item!
