Demonstration of the obedience of a police dog.
"Has the dog the power of reasoning and understanding? Most dog lovers think so..." C/U of a lovely doggy! He barks.
M/S of the dog sitting on a chair. He puts his front paws on the ground. He then gets back up on the chair. He turns around on the chair and puts his paws on the back. He puts his front paws on the ground. Then gets down. We can see the torsos of four judges standing behind the chair noting things down on pieces of paper. "Here are some striking tests made with a wonderful Alsatian. Only spoken instructions were given." L/S of eight judges watching the dog as it responds to commands from its master. It is told to turn over. His master picks him up (he is "playing dead") We see the dog jump up and pull the handkerchief out of a man's top pocket. He hands it to his master.
"Walking upstairs backwards on command.." M/S of the dog walking forwards and backwards up some stairs. "Savage or friendly by request..." C/U of the dog with his master. The man wears some kind of uniform. Possibly an American policeman. The dog takes the policeman's wrist in his mouth then lets it go. He then gives the man his paw and they "shake hands". "And helping a lady in distress." C/U of the dog chewing through some rope that has been used to tie a woman to a chair.
Was an item in Pathe Pictorial issue number 556.
Note: this is presumably a dog obedience demonstration or competition for police dogs.
