The tragedy occurred on 6 March 1953.

    "McGrew" should read McGraw.

Also killed was Thomas M Yeager.

The ship is the USS Oriskany aircraft-carrier.

The plane releasing the bomb is a Vought F4U Corsair.

Thanks for this. Is our old record of 23rd March completely wrong?

Although I can't paste the link here, I've seen a report from a newspaper called the Amsterdam Evening Recorder, dated 10th March 1953, detailing this accident.

So I'm afraid that yes, Pathe's date of 23rd March is completely wrong!
