Lovely documentary about the building of new ocean liners and about life on board ship. c. 1928
Reel 3. The maiden voyage of the liner - passengers are on board, steam is up and the warning signal "Visitors Ashore" heralds immediate departure. L/S of the liner bedecked with bunting. C/U of the funnel with steam emerging. The gangplank is moved away and the voyage begins. Shot of the waving crowds as the ship moves off. L/S of Liverpool seen from the moving ship. Furnace room - men check the equipment. "Turbines do their good turns on the propeller shafts - " Various shots of machinery in operation, wheels turning etc. C/U of man operating a large ships telegraph. Dials showing speed, pressure and propeller revolutions. On the navigating bridge the helmsman steers a true course. M/S of the Navigating Officer telephoning his instructions. High angle shot of passengers on deck sitting in deck chairs enjoying a lazy hour. Man plays with a baby in a pram. M/S of a group of young people standing at the stern of the ship having a sing song. One man plays a banjo. Great shot of a girl sitting at the stern of the ship cuddling a huge bulldog with a sailors hat on. C/U of the dog - his hatband reads: "Canadian Pacific."
Men in the bakery make crisp rolls and loaves. M/S of ovens being loaded and unloaded. M/S of half a dozen cooks preparing a meal. Waiters queue up to take meals from the chefs to the diners. We see a cabin dining saloon, "somewhere in the Atlantic." High angle shot of diners being served by waiters. M/S of the smoking room. Men sit around circular tables reading and smoking. M/S of a group having a "cosy tea party". Three women drink daintily from tea cups and the men chat. A group of children sit around on deck playing with their toys. High angle shot of a children's tug of war. Interior of the on board toy store. Girls look at soft toys. M/S of three of the girls being shown some mechanised toys by the woman storekeeper. C/U of the mechanical lion which roars. We then see the nursery. A nanny pushes a young child on a swing. "Grown-ups have their own "nursery", only they call it a "gym." C/U of a woman having her back pounded by a strange contraption. A man stands beside her operating it. She laughs. A woman exercises with weights, a man punches a boxing ball and a man does some gymnastics. They all wear ordinary clothes - no fancy gym outfits. A group of holidaymakers play a game of catch in the gym with a medicine ball. Continued.
