• Short Summary

Large number of army musicians gather together for training then to play a piece together.

  • Description

    Kneller Hall, Twickenham?, Middlesex.

Introductory intertitle reads: "Out for the day - and a strenuous day, too, for the pupils come from every Regiment in the British Army."

M/S of men in army bands walking towards the camera with their instruments. There is a cacophony of sound as they tune up or practice as they walk. Kneller Hall is seen in the background.

"Think what an inspiration this field might be to some of the 'modern' composers!" Panning shot of various musicians in uniform behind music stands practising. They are all standing around in a field.

M/S of two tuba players playing a piece of music. "Day in and day out the instruction goes on - the air is full of airs and notes." High angle shot of a group of trombonists playing music beside a river. Panning shot of musicians in the field. Clarinettists lean against trees and play. A flautist joins in. A swan swims close by.

"And, just to show they can play, the massed Band of 150 joined issue with a piano in a brilliant piece. (Conducted by Capt. H.E. Adkins, Mus. Bac., L.R.A.M., A.R.C.M., P.S.M.)."

M/S of the pianist with the band behind. Various shots of the band including a nice avant-garde shot of their silhouettes behind a Union Jack flag - very unusual. The piece of music is rather familiar but I can't name it ("Topical Music" listed on cue sheet.) Conductor stands on a high platform in front of the musicians. The music is not military music.

At the end of the piece the conductor gives a salute.
