    British Instructional Films presentation.

    Shot of an apple tree in an orchard. Small saplings are "budded". Two men work in the orchard. They cut shoots with a sharp knife, then cut slits in the trunk of the saplings and graft in the shoots. The trunk is then bound with string. Maiden trees from the nursery are dug up. Sign beside them reads: "Type II Cox". They are then planted out. We see the men dig holes and plant the saplings. Wire gauze is placed around the bottom of the tree. Poles are hammered into the ground and the trees are tied to the poles. C/U of sapling with pole and gauze.

    Trees which are between 4 and 6 years old are pruned. C/U of man pruning with secateurs. Tractor pulling plough cultivates the ground. Long shot of the orchard. Pollination rows are planted one in three. Shots of the rows of trees. Bees are used to carry the pollen. Shot of beehives and bees flying in and out. Shots of blossom on the trees. C/U of bee taking pollen from apple blossom. Tractor pulling grass cutting blades through the orchard. Man sprays the tree with pesticides. C/U of the hose used with insecticide spraying out. C/U of bough of tree with apples growing. Picking the apples. Boxes in the orchard, women pick the apples.

    C/U of bucket with apples placed in it. The apples are carefully taken out of the bucket and placed in a packing case. C/U of boughs heavy with apples. Men load up cases of apples on to a tractor trailer.

    Note: there are three prints of this film. One is labelled: "Special print for TV transmission" so this film must have gone out on TV at some time.
