• Short Summary

Ancient game of football is traditionally played in Ashbourne - the only rule is no rules.

  • Description

The full title reads "Derbyshire ALL THROUGH AND ALL AROUND THE TOWN - Ashbourne celebrates advent of Lent with football game which has no rules and whose very origin is lost in mists of our ancient history."

    Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

A man talks to the camera saying (natural sound): Tradition records that football is played in Esheborn (sp?), of course that means Ashbourne, in the 12th century..." As he continues to read the history of football in Ashbourne, the images of crowds chasing the ball, pushing, running and screaming, are seen.

A man throws a ball from the top of the tower to the crowds below. People start pushing and running - quite chaotic. A large field with crowds chasing the ball are seen. A goal is made of tree branches - it is rather tall.
