• Short Summary

Great story about a girl being interviewed and getting her dream job as an air hostess.

  • Description

    Titles read: "AIR HOSTESS".

Location of events unknown - London?

M/S of large airline taxiing on the tarmac of an airfield. Elizabeth Mackintosh, a young woman with blonde hair, walks across the field nearby, gazing at the aeroplane. It is her dream to fly! She walks towards the plane but is stopped from getting too near to it by an old man. They have a brief chat.

We then see Elizabeth with three other girls, waiting for their interviews to be air hostesses. Elizabeth is wearing a great 40s hat. She goes into the interview room and the other women move up a seat.

Great sequence with natural sound as Elizabeth is interviewed for the job. The man asks her why she wants to be a Star Girl. She says she is interested in people and in travel. Replying to further questions she says she speaks Spanish and French and mentions courses in first aid and catering. We next see Elizabeth having a (fully-clothed) medical examination and injections after getting the job.

A bus takes new Star Girls to the airliner. The pilot greets them and the girls board the plane to have a look about - "more exciting than looking over a new house". The girls are taken on a flight over London. C/U of Elizabeth looking out of a window. C/U of pilot at controls. Aerial view of St Paul's Cathedral.

"Location of events unknown - London?" - at 00:45 we see a van belonging to the airline British South American Airways (more of that later). They flew solely from the then newly-opened Heathrow Airport in London.

"large airline taxiing" - the aircraft seen here is an Avro York, Reg. No. G-AHFA. (Incidentally this aircraft went missing after an SOS in 1953 with 39 people on board, and the wreckage has never been found).

"The man asks her why she wants to be a Star Girl" - we can glean from this that she's being interviewed for a job with British South American Airways, (hence the strategically positioned van earlier!).
