    Mr. Robert McNamara, President of the International Bank for Development and Reconstruction - that is, the World Bank - was in Qatar on Monday and Tuesday (12 & 13 February) for financial talks.

    Mr. McNamara, who travelled with his wife and his deputy, Mr. Mohamad Shuib, was met at Doha Airport by the Qatar Minister of Finance and Petroleum, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin khalifa Al-Thani.

    The World Bank President was on a series of visits to Middle East countries.

    While in Qatar he met the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad Al-Thani, and visited a giant fertilizer plant at Umm Said, south of Doha.

    Qatar became a member of the World Bank in September 1972.

    SYNOPSIS: Mr. Robert McNamara, President of the International Bank for Development and Reconstruction - that's the World Bank - arrived in Qatar on Monday for financial talks. He was met at Doha Airport by Qatar's Minister of Finance and Petroleum, Sheikh Abdul Aziz. Mr. McNamara travelled with his wife and his deputy Mr. Mohamed Shuib.

    The Qatar Finance Minister had invited Mr. McNamara to visit his country for talks.

    The following day the Emir, Sheikh Khalifa, and Mr. McNamara met at Government House.

    During his visit to Qatar, the President of the World Bank also visited a giant fertilizer plant at Umm Said, south of Doha. The Qatar visit was one of a series in the Middle East and he was also scheduled to visit a number of Arab countries in Africa.

    Qatar became a member of the World Bank in September last year.
