  • Description

INDONESIAN STUDENT DEMANDS FOR THE DISMISSAL OF DR SUBANDRIO, THE FOREIGN MINISTER, REACHED A PITCH ON TUESDAY WHEN ABOUT 4,000 STUDENTS STORMED AND OCCUPIED THE FOREIGN MINISTRY IN DJAKARTA. THE SAME DAY, ANOTHER GROUP OF STUDENTS CALLING THEMSELVES "PROGRESSIVE REVOLUTIONARY YOUTHS" ATTACKED THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN DJAKARTA IN PROTEST AGAINST ALLEGED AMERICAN INTERFERENCE IN INDONESIAN AFFAIRS.

TEAR GAS AND SHOTS FIRED BY SOLDIERS FAILED TO STOP THE STUDENTS WHO ATTACKED THE FOREIGN MINISTRY. SIX STUDENTS WERE HURT BY THE GAS FUMES AND REMOVED TO A NEARBY HOSPITAL. THE STUDENTS BURST INTO THE MINISTRY BUILDING SHOUTING "GET OUT SUBANDRIO" AND OTHER SLOGANS, SANG SONGS AND DANCED. THEY BROKE OPEN THE DOORS OF DR SUBANDRIO'S OFFICE, WHICH WAS EMPTY AT THE TIME.

THE FOREIGN MINISTRY WAS OCCUPIED BY THE STUDENTS FOR THREE HOURS. THEY LEFT THE BUILDING IN A SHAMBLES, THE WALLS FACED WITH SLOGANS AND CARICATURES INSULTING DR SUBANDRIO, WHOM THEY CLAIM TO BE PRO-COMMUNIST. STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE BEEN GOING ON IN DJAKARTA FOR A NUMBER OF DAYS IN SPITE OF A BAN BY PRESIDENT SUKARNO, WHO HAS ACCUSED THE STUDENTS OF BEING PAID TO DEMONSTRATE AGAINST HIM.

HOWEVER, ANOTHER DEMONSTRATION WAS STAGED ON TUESDAY BY STUDENTS WHO ARE ACTUALLY PRO-SUKARNO. THE "PROGRESSIVE REVOLUTIONARY YOUTHS", AS THEY CALLED THEMSELVES, STORMED THE AMERICAN EMBASSY BUT WERE UNABLE TO GET INSIDE THE BUILDING. AGAIN SHOTS FIRED INTO THE AIR BY INDONESIAN SECURITY GUARDS FAILED TO STOP THE STUDENTS, BUT THIS TIME NO TEAR GAS WAS USED. AFTER SWARMING OVER THE EMBASSY FENCE, THE STUDENTS SPENT 15 MINUTES IN THE GROUNDS.

THE STUDENTS REPLACED THE AMERICAN FLAG WITH AN INDONESIAN FLAG AND DAMAGED THE EMBASSY SEAL AND MANY WINDOWS, IN ADDITION TO BURNING A NUMBER OF CARS IN THE GROUNDS AND SETTING FIRE TO A WAREHOUSE BEHIND THE EMBASSY. LATER, EMBASSY STAFF PUT OUT THE VARIOUS FIRES. NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT THE UNITED STATES HAS MADE A STRONG PROTEST TO INDONESIA OVER THE ATTACK.
