Background: African National Congress Party leader, Mr. H. Nkumbula, was greeted by a small crowd of supporters at Lusaka Airport Mar 3 when he returned from the Northern Rhodesian constitution conference in London.
Earlier that day, Mr. Nkumbula - who had visited Lagos on his way home - had told a press conference in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, that if Sir Roy Welensky declared the independence of the Federation, British troops would be flown out - he said he knew where they were based in England.
Referring to the United National Independence Party he said: "There is no difference in our policies; only in our approach to the problems of Northern Rhodesia".
