    Background: Track events were the only items missing from the programme when the Stoke Mandeville games were held recently at the famous training centre for polio victims near London.
    Although few of them can use their legs, and many are also affected in the arm polio victims from all parts of the globe gathered at the centre on Friday, July 26, to take part in this annual international contest.
    A guard-of-honour representing the competing countries formed up to greet the Duchess of Gloucester who opened the games and was presented with a bouquet by 10 year-old Richard Thompson.
    Accompanied by Dr. L. Guttmann, director of the establishment, the Duchess walked under the entry arch to watch the children's archery and senior players playing "Dartchery".
    Players showed how robust they are in a hard-fought basketball match in which Australia opposed Duchess of Gloucester House, & London team.
    She also saw L. Hogewoning of the Marathon Sports Club, Doorn, Holland, putting the shot; members of the Pan American team throwing the javelin; lady competitions in the fencing competition; and teams competing in the table tennis tournament.
