  • Description

In Lagos, and throughout the Western states of Nigeria, thousands of Moslems spent Thursday (January 3) at praying grounds celebrating Id-El-Kabir. They offered prayers to Allah for His blessings granted in the last year and for the mercy He has shown His followers. They also asked for Allah's continued protection and benevolence for the coming year.

At the Obalende praying ground in Lagos, Alhaji Liadji Ibrahim, the Chief Imam of Lagos, led the Moslems in prayer. He called on all Moslems to improve the fear of Allah in the minds of their children, saying it was basis of all the tenets and principles of Islam. The Chief Imam noted that in recent times, the fear of God was not uppermost in the Nigeria's Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.

The Chief Imam then slaughtered the sacrificial goat to start the feast of the festival.
