  • Description

The President of drought-stricken Mauritania, President Moktar Ould Daddah, has been on a brief visit to Zaire for discussions with President Mobutu Sese Seko.

SYNOPSIS: President Ould Daddah arrived in Kinshasa on Thursday (23 March) from Gabon where he had talks with President Omar Bongo. He was met at the airport by President Mobutu and senior government officials. His brief visit was described as a private meeting with Zaire's leader but observers believe the talks between the two leaders centred on Mauritania's two major problems - the severe drought which could put the country in a state of famine, and the Western Sahara conflict. However the visiting President received an official welcome at the airport.

President Ould Daddah had announced on his trip before arriving in Zaire that the national "reunification" of Mauritania was definitive and could not be made the object of any negotiations or discussion. However Mauritania would attend any future Organisation of African Unity summit on the tension in the Western Saharan sub-region, he said.

Observers believed President Daddah would be seeking aid from Zaire to relieve the effects of the present Sahel drought which experts fear could be as disastrous as that of 1969-74.
