  • Description

The last group of 39 prisoners in New York City who had refused to surrender to authorities gave themselves up Monday (Oct. 5) and ended a five-day seige.

The rioting had spread to five city jails and hundreds of inmates and several guards were injured before it was brought under control. Scores of hostages were taken by the prisoners but they were eventually released unharmed.

The prisoners staged their rebellion to protest what they call unsanitary and inhuman conditions in the jails. They claim that cells are overcrowded, police treat inmates brutally and men awaiting trail must wait for long periods before their cases are heard.

The prisoners removed from the Queens House of Detention agreed to come out only on Fire Department tower ladders, so that they would be in full view of the press and public. They charged that police had beaten earlier groups of prisoners who surrendered.

After they were lowered to the ground the prisoners were searched and taken off to jails. In different parts of the county.
