Background: A violent explosion destroyed a block of flats in Toronto on Tuesday, June 10th.. A gaping hole was blown in the front wall of the apartments and from it baths, furniture and other odds and ends hung out of it. Miraculously only one person was killed------John Armstrong the apartments' superintendent --- and three sufficiently injured to nee hospital treatment.
The block of flats, valued at a quarter of a million dollars, were shattered at about nine p.m. on Tuesday evening. The explosion shock other nearby buildings and one resident thought that it was the beginning of an earthquake. People in the striken flats were flung across their rooms and several buried in rubble. Police and firemen, together with Civil Defence rescue workers, raced the scene, and commenced digging out the injured and trapped.
When all the residents were accounted for demolition of the block started. Using excavation machinery and manual labour, the rescue workers slowly pulled the place apart. People who had loved in this four-storey building rummaged about the wreckage and rubble, claiming personal possessions.
So far, city authorities have not been able to of gas have been discounted , there is no as supply in the apartments in the street, or in that immediate area.
