    TODAY (MONDAY) GREECE OBSERVED THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARMY COLONELS' COUP WHICH SWEPT ASIDE PARLIAMENTARY GOVERNMENT AND IMPOSED A DICTATORSHIP IN THE COUNTRY.

    FLAGS WERE ON DISPLAY IN THE STREETS AND SQUARES OF ATHENS AND THE ARMY-BACKED GOVERNMENT, HEADED BY THE 50-YEAR-OLD PRIME MINISTER, GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS -- THE COUP MASTERMIND -- DECLARED THREE DAYS OF CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE EVENT.

    WHILE THE CELEBRATIONS WERE UNDERWAY, STRICT SECURITY PRECAUTIONS WERE IN FORCE AROUND THE ATHENS CATHEDRAL AS GOVERNMENT MEMBERS ATTENDED A SPECIAL SERVICE. PRIME MINISTER PAPADOPOULOS GREETED THE REGENT, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL GEORGE ZOITAKIS, AS HE STEPPED FROM HIS CAR.

    STREETS LEADING TO THE CATHEDRAL SQUARE WERE LINED WITH TROOPS, AND CADETS FROM THE THREE ARMED SERVICES WERE ON PARADE.
