An international motor show has opened in West Berlin, featuring not just the latest available models, but also a selection of the most famous racing and special performance cars from the past.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of people have already flocked to the show, open for two weeks. Of particular interest to visitors is the display of vintage cars, like this 1898 Opel, alongside modern cars, like this Mercedes.

A 1928 Opel Sander racing car, still capable of beating many a car on the road today.

One of the most popular exhibits was the jet car, 'Bluebird' in which the British driver Donald Campbell achieved the world water speed record of nearly 300 miles per hour. (480 k.p.h.) Campbell was killed in Bluebird, trying to improve the records. Rather less racy machines have also been drawing the crowds. This motorised bed has limited application on roads but certainly adds style to the garage!
Something for those who regard driving as a battle - a gladiator's chariot, complete with a 6.8 litre engine. Here was even a motorised 'sexmobile'
Veteran British racing driver Stirling Moss tried out a number of the cars on show, along with another famous driver, Juan Fangio of Argentina.

Other drivers performed dare-devil stunts for the crowds.

Undoubtedly one of the most spectacular performances was from trick motorcyclist Jurgen Baumgarten, who trilled spectators and news photographers alike with his act.

Not content with clearing two cars, Bamgarten then had a total of eight positioned side by side.
