  • Description

THE FAMOUS WATER VILLAGE OF BRUNEI, WHICH HOUSES ABOUT 25,000 PEOPLE -- ONE THIRD OF ITS POPULATION -- IS ONE OF THE MANY AREAS WHERE THE PEOPLE LISTEN TO INDONESIAN PROPAGANDA BY RADIO AND OTHER MEANS.

THE BRUNEI GOVERNMENT, IN TAKING IMMEDIATE STEPS TO COUNTER THESE PROPAGANDA LAST WEEK SENT OUT BRITISH GURKHA TROOPS INTO THESE AREAS TO INVESTIGATE IF THE PEOPLE ARE BEING FORCED TO LISTEN TO THESE PROPAGANDA BROADCASTS.THE TROOPS LEFT IN FAST ASSAULT CRAFT, AS MOST AREAS ARE IN SWAMPLAND.

THE FIRST REPORT THAT THE PEOPLE WERE LISTENING TO INDONESIAN PROPAGANDA CAME FROM TEMBURONG, A TINY ENCLAVE OF BRUNEI JUTTING INTO MALAYSIAN SARAWAK TERRITORY.THE AREA HAS 40,000 INHABITANTS.

BRUNEI IS A SMALL INDEPENDENT OIL-RICH STATE NESTLING BETWEEN MALAYSIAN SARAWAK AND SABAH, ON THE WEST COAST; AND ABOUT 100 MILES FROM INDONESIAN BORNEO.IT REMAINS QUITE AS THE DISPUTE BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND INDONESIA CONTINUES.

BRUNEI, WHICH ELECTED TO REMAIN OUTSIDE OF THE FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA WHEN IT WAS FORMED IN SEPTEMBER, 1963, WAS ROCKED BY AN INTERNAL REVOLUTION IN DECEMBER, 1962.
