  • Description

The Laotian Cabinet met at the Prime Minister's office in the capital, Vientiane, on Wednesday (14 May), to discuss the wave of right-wing resignations that has left the Pathet Lao to dominate the coalition Government which was set up two years ago.

Earlier, military sources had said that the commander of the last Laotian military region still controlled by rightist forces had thrown his support behind the Communist oriented government. His action was the latest in a series of recent shifts among political and military leaders in the country.

During the previous six days, the air force, the Finance Ministry, the police college and the other military regions had all declared their backing for the coalition. Among those right-wing officials replaced by the Government was the commander of Vientiane's city security force. His place was taken by a General who was considered more acceptable to the Pathet Lao.

On Thursday, the mixed Commission of pro-Communist Pathet Lao and former Vientiane government officials, asked the Government for tanks and anti-aircraft missiles to protect Vientiane and Luang Prabang against any coup attempt by right-wingers who had been removed from office.
