INTRODUCTION: A team of five Swiss architects arrived in Athens on Thursday (24 February) to carry out a survey on the damage to the Acropolis caused by atmospheric pollution.

SYNOPSIS: The rock of the Acropolis -- the 2,500 year-old citadel which stands in the centre of Athens -- has been decayed over the years by atmospheric pollution.

The Swiss team visited the site immediately after their arrival in Athens, with former Mayor George Plytas acting as their guide.

They have a plan to save the Acropolis by erecting a huge glass dome over the whole rock.

They'll put their plans to Greek Culture and Science Ministers during the next few days.

The damage to the Acropolis has reached such proportions that the temples, sculptures and foundations cannot be preserved unless a complex and costly restoration programme is put into effect almost immediately.

Funds of about 15 million dollars (U.S) are needed for the initial stage of the project and a joint Greek Government-United Nations appeal has been launched to raise the money. In the meantime, the most valuable statues have been removed and replaced with replicas.
