  • Description

On Thursday (August 16) at Anfa airport near Casablanca in Morocco, King Hassan II of Morocco celebrated the first anniversary of an attempt on his life by rebel Air Force officers. On August 16th 1972, the royal aircraft was attacked while bringing the King back from France, but he escaped unhurt.

King Hassan went to the airport with his brother, the Prince Moulay Abdallah. They reviewed a parade by units from the three armed forces, and then the King pinned decorations on the crew of the royal aircraft. He also pinned a medal on the nose of the aircraft and named it 'Providential'.

Mohammed Oufkir, once head of Morocco's armed forces, was officially reported to have committed suicide shortly after the attack. On January 13, eleven officers were executed for platting the attack, which was part of an unsuccessful coup attempt. On August 13th the King's prosecutor called for the death penalty for a further 25.
