  • Description

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, on Wednesday night (May 21) recommended the Security Council to extend the mandate of the U.N. Disengagement Force (UNDOF) on the Golan Heights for another six months to the end of November.

In a report to the Council he said both Syria and Israel, whose armies are separated by the U.N. force, had agreed to the extension.

The Council is expected to meet next week to adopt a resolution to this effect.

Dr. Waldheim said the continued presence of UNDOF was essential: not only to maintain quiet in the Israel-Syria sector, but also to provide an atmosphere conducive to further efforts toward the achievement of the just and lasting peace called for by the Security Council and to assist in such further efforts as required.

So the U.N. Peruvian troops who are present manning Operation Post 55 in the buffer zone will continue to help keep the peace and investigate possible ceasefire violations. On Wednesday they recorded a possible ceasefire breach by an Israeli Phantom jet - probably on a reconnaissance flight.

Back in Camp Bolivar, the Peruvian soldiers parade - and keep fit. There are a total of 348 Peruvian soldiers serving with the U.N. force set up a year ago under the Syrian-Israel troop disengagement agreement.

The Head of the U.N. Force, Austrian Colonel Hannes Philipp, said recently that the situation along the Golan Heights and Mount Hermon was calm.

"The front is completely quiet and there are no indications of reports pointing to possible clashes soon", he said.

During the past five months UNDOF CLEARED 52 KILOMETRES (35 miles) of roads from mines and buried 69 heavy artillery shells.
