  • Description

INTRODUCTION: The French people went to the polls on Sunday (13 March) for the first round of the nationwide Municipal elections. According to the first results, the French left-wing alliance had made moderate advances.

SYNOPSIS: There was a heavy turnout at the polls and up to 80 per cent of the 33 million electorate appeared to favour the socialist-Communist alliance. The main interest however is centred in Paris, as the battle between former Prime Minister Jacques Chirac and President Valery Giscard D'Estaing's candidate Michel d'Ornano reached the final stages. First indications show that Gaullist leader M. Chirac will become the Mayor of Paris. The post of Paris Mayor is traditionally one of the most important political positions in France.

Next Sunday (21 March) the second round ballot will be held. The left wing advance has raised the hopes of Socialist and Communist leaders who will be fighting France's critical parliamentary elections next year.
