  • Description

LEADERS OF FOUR ITALIAN POLITICAL PARTIES BEGAN NEGOTIATIONS IN ROME TODAY (MONDAY) IN AN EFFORT TO FORM A BROADLY-BASED COALITION GOVERNMENT -- AN ADMINISTRATION STRONG ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH THE COUNTRY'S GRAVE SOCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL TROUBLES.

THE PROPOSED CENTRE-LEFT ALLIANCE WOULD COMPRISE PRIME MINISTER MARIO RUMOR'S RULING CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT PARTY -- WHICH DOES NOT COMMAND A CLEAR-CUT PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY -- THE REPUBLICANS, THE SOCIALISTS AND THE UNITARIAN SOCIALISTS.

AFTER TODAY'S TWO HOUR MEETING, CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT SECRETARY ARNOLD FORLANI SAID THAT THE PARTY LEADERS WOULD MEET AGAIN IN A FEW DAYS.

REPUBLICAN SECRETARY UGO LA MALFA ADDED THAT THERE SEEMED TO BE A POSSIBILITY OF A GENUINE RECONCILIATION BETWEEN THE PARTIES. ITALY'S LAST COALITION BROKE UP SIX MONTHS AGO AFTER THE SOCIALISTS SPLIT INTO TWO PARTIES IN A ROW OVER CO-OPERATION WITH THE COMMUNIST OPPOSITION.

ALSO PRESENT AT TODAY'S MEETING WERE THE SECRETARIES OF SOCIALIST PARTY, FRANCESCO DE MARTINO, AND OF THE UNITARIAN SOCIALISTS, MAURO FERRI.
