  • Description

Six Israelis were freed unharmed on Friday (29 December) after being held hostage by four Arab guerrillas who took over the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok the previous day.

The guerrillas handed over their weapons when they boarded a Thai International jetliner for a flight to Cairo. However, they took with them as a safe conduct guarantee, the Egyptian Ambassador to Bangkok and two high-ranking Thai ministers.

The guerrillas originally demanded that 36 Arab commandos imprisoned in Israel be freed in exchange for the six hostages. But after negotiations in which the Egyptian Ambassador Mustapha El Essawy played the leading role, the Arabs settled for safe conduct out of Thailand to Egypt.

A bus was called for and backed into the Embassy drive. With the four guerrillas and their hostages aboard, the bus drove out of the gates and to the airport. A police ??? accompanied the Bus.

Security measures at the airport were extremely tight and the transfer of the guerrillas from the bus to the aircraft was shielded from onlookers' view.

SYNOPSIS: Arab guerrillas seized the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, and held it for 18 hours on Thursday and Friday. Inside they took six Israeli hostages and demanded the release of 36 Arab commandos imprisoned in Israel.

But after negotiations in which Egyptian Ambassador Mustapha El Essawy played a leading role, the guerrillas settled for safe conduct out of Thailand to Egypt.

Shortly after the Egyptian Ambassador left the Embassy, police called for a bus. As the vehicle drove through the Embassy Gates, it was reported the four Arab guerillas and their Israeli hostages were aboard. The bus was taking the guerrillas to a waiting aircraft at Bangkok's Dono Muang Airport, 15 miles away. A police escort accompanied the bus, which drove off at a high speed leaving newsmen following in a fleet of taxis.

Once t the airport, they boarded a Thai International aircraft for a flight to Cairo via Karachi, but not before they had released their Israeli hostages.

The hostages were driven to a Bangkok Hospital for a medical inspection following their eighteen-hour ???. The Egyptian Ambassador to Bangkok, Thailand's Air Chief Marshal Dawee Chullasapya and Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Major General Chartchel ???, were aboard the aircraft in place of the Israeli hostages.
