  • Description

THE LONG-AWAITED PRE-OLYMPICS MARATHON RUN IN MEXICO CITY YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) FAILED TO PRODUCE THE CROP OF ALTITUDE VICTIMS PREDICTED BY MANY OF THE EXPERTS. HOWEVER, THE 42 KILOMETRE (26 MILES 303 YARDS) RACE DID PRODUCE A STRIKING WINNER - IN THE SHAPE OF THE 30-YEAR-OLD BELGIAN, GASTON ROELANTS.

THIS WAS ROELANTS FIRST MARATHON, BUT THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF INEXPERIENCE IN HIS STYLE. THE BELGIAN LED THE ATHLETES FOR MOST OF THE RACE IN HIS FAST-MOTION CONDUCTED TOUR OF MEXICO CITY. FINISHING THE RACE IN 2 HOURS 19 MINUTES AND 37 SECONDS, ROELANTS WAS HOTLY PURSUED BY JAPAN'S SEIICHIRO SASAKI. BUT SASAKI WAS UNABLE TO STAY WITH THE BELGIAN WHEN HE PUT ON A FINAL SPURT.

AFTER THE RACE, ROELANTS APPEARED REMARKABLY UNAFFECTED BY THE ALTITUDE, WHICH EXPERTS FELT WOULD LEAVE LONG-DISTANCE RUNNERS SHORT OF OXYGEN. SAID THE BELGIAN: 'IT WAS A DODDLE...... IT WAS SO EASY, I LOVED EVERY MINUTE.' SEIICHIRO SASAKI, ON THE OTHER HAND, COLLAPSED AFTER THE FINISH, AND RECEIVED OXYGEN. BUT HE SOON LEFT FOR HIS HOTEL, BLAMING THE HEAT, NOT THE ALTITUDE.
