  • Description

The Sikorsky Aircraft Company of the United States has recently developed a helicopter which is believed to be the first ever designed specifically for airline use and to airline standards. It is the S-61L and will have a seating capacity of 25 or 28, depending on the seating arrangement. The aircraft is powered by twin gas turbine engines and has the capability to continue flight to normal landing areas with one engine inoperative.

Should it be required to operate the S-61L over water, the hull can be sealed to make it an amphibious aircraft. This will permit operations from land, water, snow, ice or almost any other surface.

The helicopter had its first flight in December 1960 and is expected to receive its certificate of airworthiness in the very near future. It should be ready for service with airlines by January 1962. It will have a maximum speed of 147 miles an hour.
