Background: The Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, M. Rene Maheu, said last week Zaire should try to retain its ancestral values.
M. Maheu told a press conference at the end of an official visit to Zaire on Wednesday (20 March) before leaving for Ghana: "If these values disappear here, as they have in the West, it will lead to the certain impoverishment of the whole world."
Two days earlier, M. Maheu held talks with the Zaire President Mobutu Sese Seko at the President's holiday home at Mont Galiema. The talks were also attended by the Commissioner of State for National Education, M. Mobilia.
M. Maheu expressed satisfaction with the operations of two training colleges established in Zaire with UNESCO help.
The UNESCO Director General also visited the hydro-electric project at Inga, during his stay in Zaire.
