  • Description

A `Symbolic' funeral was held in Baghdad, Iraq's capital last Thursday (19 June) for four Arab Liberation Front (ALF) commandoes killed four days earlier during a raid on the northern israeli frontier town, Kfar Yuval.

The four members of the Iraqi-backed A.L.F died in a hail of bullets and grenade blasts as Israeli military forces stormed a farmhouse where they were holding four people hostage. Two Israelis died in the action.

The guerrillas had demanded the release of 12 Arabs held in Israeli jails but the main aim of the thrust had been to free the Greek Catholic prelate, Archbishop Hilarion Capucci, who was convicted last year as an Al Fatah gunrunner.

The raid touched off swift Israeli reprisal. Warplanes raided across the Lebanese border and reduced the village of Kfar Shouba to rubble. It had been largely rebuilt after its virtual destruction during Arab-Israeli artillery duels only five months ago.

Mr. Ali Ghannam, a member of the national Arab Ba'ath Socialist party leadership was amongst the representatives of commando, political and professional organisation who took part in the last hursday's ceremony.
