  • Description

Three followers of slain American Negro leader Malcolm X were arrested in New York City Monday night (1 March) on charges of illegal possession of a weapon, a sawed-off shotgun.

The three were arrested in an apartment in the Bronx borough of New York City. Police said the suspects had gone to the apartment to meet the occupant, who was not identified, and discuss the events that have followed the murder of Malcolm X at a New York City rally 21 February. The occupant of the apartment never showed up. Police confiscated the sawed-off shotgun, but found no ammunition for it.

After questioning the arrested men for three hours, the police said the three had no connection with the murder of Malcolm X. The police also said there was no evidence linking the three to the subsequent burning of a Black Muslim mosque in the Harlem district of New York City. It is believed that the fire-bomb attack on the mosque may have been made by followers of Malcolm X in retaliation for his assassination. The Black Muslims are suspected of plotting the murder.

The three charged with illegal possession of the sawed-off shotgun were identified as John 57X Grey, 20 years old; Cyril 2X James, 18, and Willie Holton, 18 Grey and James were said to be former Black Muslim who became followers of Malcolm X after he broke with the sect. Nilton was said to have never belonged to the Black Muslims, but to have been a follower of Malcolm X.

The Black Muslims use the letter "X" as a surname to replace their original "slave name", most of which derive from their ancestors white owners. The numbers used with X distinguish different persons with the same names.
