    SPORT: CYCLE-BALL

Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved

Background: Playing football on cycles, and scoring by points as in rugby, is a new sport sweeping Europe. For players - as agile as trick cyclists in a circus - and fans, Stuttgart Oct 19-11 was the focal point of the game with six nations competing in the world championships.

Teams consist of two cyclists. At times the game looks like a slow cycle race, then comes the attack as front wheels dribble the fast-moving ball into position for a goal shot.

Austria beat Denmark 8-2 then the match between France and Czechoslovakia (2-4) brought the fans gasping to the edges of their seats in the stands as the cyclists, in hopping and prancing movements dribbled the ball into position. Switzerland and West Germany (2-2) maintained the excitement dribbling expertly to score goals with short sharp jabs at the ball off the front wheels.

Then came the lions of the tourney - West Germany and Czechoslovakia (4-3). The Czechs led 3-1 at half time. At times they kept the ball on the move almost as fast as in a table-tennis championship. But all the time, the four aces demonstrated the quality of trick cyclists coupled with the precision of centre forwards in a soccer Cup Final.
