    EXTENSIVE FLOODING IN TWO PROVINCES OF KENYA HAS LEFT MORE THAN 7,000 PEOPLE HOMELESS AND CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO CROPS AND PROPERTY.

    AT LEAST SEVEN PEOPLE ARE REPORTED TO HAVE DROWNED WHEN THE FLOODS, CAUSED BY EXCEPTIONAL HEAVY RAINS, HIT MANY REGIONS IN EAST AFRICA.

    THE FLOOD WATERS HAVE DESTROYED HOMES AND CROPS, SWEPT AWAY LIVESTOCK, AND WRECKED BRIDGES AND ROADS IN OTHER PARTS OF KENYA, TANZANIA AND UGANDA. THE WORST HIT AREAS ARE BUSIA AND NYANZA DISTRICTS IN WESTERN KENYA. OTHER AREAS BADLY HIT WERE THE COASTAL AREAS OF KENYA WHERE 8.45 INCHES (21 CENTIMETRES) - 5 INCHES (13 CENTIMETRES) ABOVE AVERAGE - HIT MOMBASA.

    EMERGENCY SUPPLIES OF BLANKETS, FOOD AND CLOTHING HAVE BEEN FLOWN FROM NAIROBI TO THE VICTIMS WHO ARE BEING HOUSED IN TENTED CAMPS ERECTED BY THE KENYA ARMY. NOW THE RAINS HAVE ABATED AND WATER LEVELS ARE GOING DOWN LEAVING BEHIND HAVOC AND LARGE REPAIR BILLS.
