  • Description

CARDINAL PAUL-EMILE LEGER, UNTIL LAST MONTH THE ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP OF MONTREAL, HAS ARRIVED IN WEST AFRICA TO START A NEW LIFE AS A MISSIONARY AMONG LEPERS.

THE 63-YEAR-OLD PRINCE OF THE CHURCH FLEW TO DAKAR IN SENEGAL AFTER RECEIVING PERMISSION FROM THE VATICAN TO BECOME WHAT HE CALLED A SIMPLE MISSIONARY. BEFORE LEAVING CANADA HE SAID THAT HE WAS GOING TO LOOK AROUND AFRICA IN THE HOPE OF FINDING A BISHOP WHO WOULD LET HIM DO MISSIONARY WORK AMONG WHAT HE CALLED THE POOREST MEN ON EARTH, THE AFRICAN LEPERS.

IN DAKAR HE SAID HE WOULD SPEND SIX MONTHS IN STUDY IN FRENCH-SPEAKING WEST AFRICAN STATES BEFORE MAKING FINAL PLANS FOR HIS WORK. HE SAID HE HAD CHOSEN THE WORK AMONG LEPERS BECAUSE THEY HAD BIBLICAL AND EVANGELICAL ROOTS. "JESUS WAS THE LEPERS' FRIEND, AND INDEED THE FRIEND OF ALL SUFFERERS," HE EXPLAINED.

HIS LAST WORDS TO THE PEOPLE OF MONTREAL BEFORE HE LEFT: "LOVE ONE ANOTHER."
